How to paint the Maugan Ra set

  1. Step 1: Priming
Prime your miniature with Chaos Black primer to create a dark base for the model. This will enhance the contrast when painting the white bones and black clothing.
  2. Step 2: Base Coat – Bones
Start by painting the bones of Maugan Ra with a white base coat. Use paints like Wrack White or White Scar. Apply an even layer of white paint to all the bone areas, such as the skeleton mask, rib cage, and any other bone-like details.
  3. Step 3: Base Coat – Clothing
Paint the clothing of Maugan Ra with a black base coat. Use paints like Abaddon Black or Corvus Black. Apply a smooth and even layer of black paint to all the areas of the miniature that represent clothing, such as the cloak, robes, and any fabric-like textures.
  4. Step 4: Highlighting – Bones
To add depth and dimension to the bones, begin highlighting them with a lighter shade of white. Mix in a small amount of white paint, like Ulthuan Grey, with the base coat color. Apply this lighter shade to the raised areas of the bones, such as the edges of the skeleton mask, ribs, and other protrusions.
  5. Step 5: Layering – Clothing
For the clothing, create a subtle texture and variation by layering different shades of black. Mix in a small amount of Mechanicus Standard Grey or Dark Reaper with the black base coat to create a slightly lighter shade. Apply this color to the raised areas of the clothing, emphasizing folds, creases, and edges.
  6. Step 6: Fine Details
Focus on painting the fine details of Maugan Ra, such as the weapons, accessories, and any additional elements on the model. Use different paints to add depth and interest. For example, you can paint the weapon blades with a metallic color like Leadbelcher, or add a touch of red with Mephiston Red for an accent color on small details like gemstones or eyes.
  7. Step 7: Wash
Apply a wash to the entire model to enhance the shadows and add definition. Use a black wash, like Nuln Oil, to darken the recessed areas of the bones and clothing. Be sure to cover all the appropriate areas, allowing the wash to settle into the crevices and add depth to the miniature.
  8. Step 8: Highlights and Final Touches
After the wash has dried, go back and add final highlights to the bones and clothing. Use a light gray or off-white color, such as Ulthuan Grey or Pallid Wych Flesh, to carefully paint the edges and raised areas of the bones. For the clothing, use a lighter shade of gray, like Dawnstone or Administratum Grey, to add final highlights to the layered areas and edges.
  9. Step 9: Basing
Create a suitable base for Maugan Ra that complements the Grim Reaper theme. Consider using texture paints or other basing materials in dark tones to enhance the overall aesthetic. You can add additional details like gravestones, skulls, or a dark, haunting scenery to complete the atmosphere.
  10. Step 10: Varnish
To protect your work and give the miniature a finished look, apply a varnish. Use a matte varnish for a non-reflective finish that preserves the dark and somber appearance. Follow the instructions on the varnish product for application.
