On the TableTop

Leviathan is a colossal box containing two armies of miniatures and books and it’s the official box of the new, Warhammer 40000 10th Edition.

The Space Marines Army comprises 25 battle-hardened and elite soldiers who have sworn to protect the imperium against all odds.

Additionally, there is a swarm of 47 hungry Tyranids whose primary goal is to consume all the biomass in the galaxy.

Complete list of what’s in the Leviathan Box Set:

The Space Marines Army in the Leviathan Box

The Marines are deploying new units to counter the Tyranids’ threat as the jaws of Hive Fleet Leviathan close on the Galactic West. The miniatures of the Space Marines army include the Captain in Terminator Armour, the Librarian in Terminator Armour, the Apothecary Biologis, the Lieutenant in Phobos Armour, the Sternguard Veteran Squad, the Terminator Squad, the Infernus Squad, and the Ballistus Dreadnought.

These miniatures have unique capabilities that make them a valuable addition to the army. For instance, the Sternguard Veterans’ unerring proficiency with bolt weapons makes them fearsome combatants against Tyranids.

The Ballistus Dreadnought, on the other hand, is a weapons platform equipped with a missile launcher and a lascannon, making it a perfect counter to heavily armored enemies.

The Tyranids Army in the Leviathan Box

The Tyranids Army consists of voracious alien swarms invading the galaxy with one terrible purpose: to devour every last shred of biomass, reconstitute it into even more powerful biomorphs, and repeat the cycle on the next world in their path.

The army comprises the Winged Tyranid Prime, the Neurotyrant, the Screamer-Killer, Von Ryan’s Leapers, Termagants, Neurogaunts, Barbgaunts, and the Psychophage.

The Winged Tyranid Prime is a hideous alpha-beast with strength and agility, while the Neurotyrant liquifies the minds of its prey as it orchestrates hordes of Tyranids to victory.

The Screamer-Killer is the biggest and most infamous adaptation of the Carnifexes, and Von Ryan’s Leapers are ambush-hunters that inflict damage on the hive fleet’s target planet.

The Termagants are huge swarms that erode their enemy’s defences through sheer weight of numbers, and the Neurogaunts are a variant strain of gaunt that protect the powerful synapse creatures that coordinate the Tyranid invasion.

Finally, the Barbgaunts are living ordnance that shower targets with projectiles that explode into serrated chitin shards, and the Psychophage is imbued with a hunger for the enemy by the Hive Mind. All the miniatures in the Tyranids army have unique traits that make them formidable foes.

Mission Cards, Crusade Rules, and the Leviathan Book

First and foremost, the Leviathan book is an impressive 392-page hardback tome, with a full-art cover that has spot gloss effects and a black ribbon bookmark. Divided into several major sections, this book covers everything from the Warhammer hobby to the Core Rules, Combat Patrol rules, and Crusade Rules for the Tyrannic War.

The Warhammer Hobby section gives an overview of collecting, building, painting, and playing with miniatures. The Dark Imperium and The Forces of the 41st Millennium sections offer a deep dive into the state of play in the galaxy, examining its history, major players, and key locations.

The Core Rules section is a 60-page segment that explains everything you need to know to play on the tabletop. The revised and simplified rules make for fast-paced and thrilling battles in the grim darkness of the far future. Additionally, the Core Rules section has its own separate page numbers to ensure cross-referencing of rules from other editions yet to be released.

Combat Patrol Game Mode

Leviathan also introduces a new, simplified way to play Warhammer 40,000 called Combat Patrol. This game mode balances the Combat Patrol boxes available for each faction, granting certain units extra abilities and removing some from others. You only need the rules and one Combat Patrol per player to get started.

The Tyrannic War Crusade rules are another exciting addition, which will be released as a separate supplement book later this year. In the meantime, the Leviathan book provides a comprehensive guide to campaigning in the Fourth Tyrannic War.

The Crusade rules offer a full swathe of narrative missions and upgrades specific to the Tyrannic War and can be used by every faction.

Mission Cards

In addition to these features, Leviathan also comes with mission cards. These cards build exciting, unexpected, and well-balanced missions for your games.

The deck contains 66 cards, including five Deployment cards, nine Primary Mission cards, 12 Mission Rules cards, 16 Attacker Secondary Mission cards, 16 Defender Secondary Mission cards, four Attacker Gambit cards, and four Defender Gambit cards.

Moreover, you get six 40mm Objective Markers as sturdy card tokens, and a 10-page rules insert for using your deck.

What’s next?

The launch of Leviathan marks just the beginning of the upcoming edition of Warhammer 40,000, with a steady stream of releases to follow.

Each faction will have their own set of Index Cards featuring datacards for all available units, as well as their own Detachment rules, Stratagems, and Enhancements, which can be downloaded online for free from the launch day.
