How to paint the Chaplain Grimaldus & Retinue set
- Step 1: Basecoating
Start by basecoating the armor and details of the miniatures using a black paint such as Abaddon Black or Chaos Black. Apply thin layers to ensure smooth coverage. - Step 2: Armor Trim
Using a small brush, paint the trim of the armor with a metallic silver color like Runefang Steel or Ironbreaker. This includes the edges of the armor plates, shoulder pads, and any other metallic details. - Step 3: Purity Seals and Scrolls
Using a small brush, paint the purity seals and scrolls on the miniatures with a dark brown color like Dryad Bark or Rhinox Hide. This adds depth and contrast to the model. - Step 4: Robes and Cloth
Using a medium brush, paint any robes or cloth areas with a dark brown or black color. This gives a sense of austerity and matches the Black Templars theme. You can use colors like XV-88 or Skavenblight Dinge. - Step 5: Chapter Iconography
Using a fine detail brush, carefully paint the Black Templars chapter iconography on the shoulder pads and other appropriate areas. Use white or bone-colored paints like White Scar or Ushabti Bone to create the iconic Templar crosses and symbols. - Step 6: Weaponry
Paint the weapons with a metallic silver color like Leadbelcher or Iron Warriors. This includes the chainswords, bolters, and any other weapons carried by the miniatures. Add additional details like scopes, grips, and barrels as desired. - Step 7: Red Accents
Using a small brush, paint small accents and details with a deep red color like Mephiston Red or Khorne Red. This can include lenses, power cables, or small markings to add a touch of the Black Templars iconic red. - Step 8: Optional Details
If desired, you can add additional details to the miniatures. For example, you can paint the eyes with a bright red or glowing effect using Evil Sunz Scarlet or Fire Dragon Bright. You can also add weathering effects or battle damage using dark grey or black paints. - Step 9: Varnish
Once the paint has dried, protect your miniatures by applying a varnish or protective coat. This will help preserve the paint job and provide a matte or glossy finish, depending on your preference.
