On the TableTop

Leading their Black Templars brethren from the front lines, Marshals exemplify the strength and skill of the warriors under their command. They are paragons of strategic genius with centuries of battlefield experience, and their great deeds are often rewarded with ancient artefacts drawn from the Chapter’s vaults.
Whereas Codex-compliant Chapters take to the battlefields under the command of Captains, the Black Templars are lead by the fearsome Marshals, whose commanding presence enhances the abilities of the Space Marines who fight alongside them. Armed with a choice of a power sword or power axe and a plasma pistol or auto-flamer, this mighty warrior is an ideal HQ choice. You can also choose between two heads for this marshal – both are unhelmeted, one wearing a rebreather while the other wears a circlet crown.

How to paint the Black Templars Marshal

  1. Step 1: Prime the model
Start by applying a thin, even coat of primer to your Black Templars Marshal model using a spray can or airbrush. Choose a black primer, such as Chaos Black, to establish a dark and menacing base.
  2. Step 2: Basecoat the armor
Using a medium-sized brush, apply a basecoat of a dark color to the armor. For the Black Templars, a deep black like Abaddon Black works perfectly. Cover all the desired areas evenly, ensuring a solid and smooth coverage.
  3. Step 3: Highlight the armor
With a smaller brush, carefully apply a lighter shade to highlight the raised areas of the armor. Use a dark gray, such as Mechanicus Standard Grey, to create contrast and add depth. Focus on edges and contours to accentuate the details of the model.
  4. Step 4: Paint the details
Switch to an even smaller brush to paint the various details of the model. Use a metallic silver like Leadbelcher for the Marshal’s sword and other metallic elements. For the purity seals, choose a parchment color like Ushabti Bone. Apply thin layers and build up the color gradually for a neat finish.
  5. Step 5: Add the chapter iconography
Using a small brush, carefully paint the Black Templars chapter iconography on the model. The shoulder pad may feature a cross-like symbol, known as the Crusader’s Cross, which can be painted with a bold red like Mephiston Red.
  6. Step 6: Accentuate the details
Apply washes to add depth and definition to the model. Use Nuln Oil for the black armor, carefully applying it to the recesses. Apply Agrax Earthshade to the metallic elements and any other areas that could benefit from shading.
  7. Step 7: Fine-tune the highlights
With a small brush and the original highlight color from Step 3, carefully touch up the highlights to make them pop. Focus on the edges and raised areas, ensuring a smooth transition between shades.
  8. Step 8: Finishing touches
Give the model a final inspection and make any necessary touch-ups. You can add additional details like battle damage, weathering effects, or personal touches if desired. Once you’re satisfied with the result, apply a protective varnish to seal the paintwork.
