As excitement mounts for Space Marine 2 and the Warhammer 40K collaboration with COD:Warzone stirs the pot, it sparks an intriguing idea…

Which standout titles could reach new heights of epicness by weaving in elements from the Warhammer 40,000 universe? What top video games could be reimagined (or just enriched) with a bit of the ole’ grim-dark?

We’ve ranked our ideas below, based on how pumped we are about each possibility. If you want to contribute to this exercise, let us know in the comments.

Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 Poster

As a game already steeped in the ethos of a dystopian, galactic warfare, Helldivers 2 is practically begging for a Warhammer 40K treatment. Or maybe the other way around?

Regardless, the cooperative nature of Helldivers 2 makes it a perfect platform for squad-based tactics reminiscent of the tabletop game.

Let’s start with the bad guys: enemies like Terminids and Automatons, are pretty much the Tyranids and Necrons’ long-lost cousins. And the similarities don’t stop there… They say HellPod, we say Drop Pod; they say Mech Suit we say Dreadnought.

With so many similarities – and the success Helldivers 2 has – we wonder if Games Workshop shouldn’t just ask Arrowhead Game Studios to clone them the game and turn everyone into a Space Marine.

We’re ready to jump on the creative team and help them with a few ideas of our own. Here’s one for free:

Bring the Spirit of Space Marine Chapters to Helldivers 2 Armor Sets

Why stop at just playing the game when you can truly become a part of the Warhammer universe? Let’s gear up in armor inspired by the most storied Space Marine Chapters in the galaxy.

Donning the furs and runic armor of the Space Wolves not only looks intimidating but also boosts your resilience in the harshest environments, mirroring the hardiness of Fenris’ finest.

Slip into the shadowy garb of the Raven Guard, and you’ll find yourself moving with a stealth unmatched by your foes, making you nearly invisible to enemy scanners.

And if you choose the regal yet fearsome armor of the Blood Angels, expect a surge in melee combat prowess, allowing you to tear through enemies with a fury that would make Sanguinius proud.

Each set of Chapter-inspired armor isn’t just a cosmetic change; it’s a way to embody the unique essence and tactical advantages of the Imperium’s finest warriors, bringing a piece of their legend and tactics into the cooperative fray of HellDivers 2.

Weapons Can Get an Upgrade Too

Forget about the standard issue; it’s time to bring in the big guns of the Warhammer 40K universe. Imagine letting loose with the iconic Bolters, sending a hail of devastating rounds at your foes.

Or how about mounting a Heavy Bolter for those moments when only a barrage of firepower will do?

And for the pinnacle of ranged supremacy, to replace that Mech Suit, envision piloting a Dreadnought, equipped with missile launchers and autocannons.

This isn’t just about upping your firepower; it’s about infusing Helldivers 2 with the epic scale and detailed armament of the Warhammer 40K world, transforming every firefight into a legendary engagement.

Fortnite

Fortnite - Warhammer 40K Crossover
Fortnite Poster

In 2018, Epic Games unveiled their inaugural major crossover during Season 4, collaborating with Marvel to coincide with the release of the blockbuster film, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War.

This partnership introduced the Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mode (LTM) to the game. Players could wield the Mythic Infinity Gauntlet, transforming into the film’s antagonist, Thanos, and gaining unique powers and enhanced health.

Since then, numerous other franchises have made an appearance in the game.

Here’s what we think should happen… again, free of charge.:)

Mixing Up the Fortnite Formula with a Warhammer 40K Twist

A (fictitious) Fortnite Space Marine

Imagine a Fortnite season themed around a warp storm that brings Warhammer 40K characters and chaos into the battle royale island.

Players could don skins of Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, or even iconic heroes and villains like Roboute Guilliman or Abaddon the Despoiler.

Special events could include building your own fortress monastery or defending against waves of Tyranids.

We’re talking about dropping into the battle royale island not just to survive but to survive with style. And by style, I mean decked out in the most badass Warhammer 40K gear.

Picture this: one minute you’re gliding down as a high-flying Eldar, the next you’re charging through structures like a beefy Space Marine.

But why stop at wardrobe changes? Let’s dial it up with some Limited-Time Modes that make you feel like you’re smack in the middle of Warhammer’s legendary battles.

Imagine a sprawling Imperial city map, where you and your squad are holding down fortresses against waves of Orks.

And because no epic saga is complete without the right tools of the trade, imagine Fortnite’s arsenal getting a Warhammer 40K makeover.

From the iconic Sniper Rifles letting you rain down some righteous destruction to legendary Power Swords that make close encounters a brutal affair, the weapon possibilities are endless.

And for the grand finale, picture jumping into a Rhino transport for a quick getaway or laying waste as a towering Dreadnought. That’s not just a game-changer; it’s a whole new game.

Why Everyone (under 30) is Going to Love This Mash-Up

First off, Fortnite thrives on change, and a Warhammer 40K shake-up is like hitting the refresh button in the most explosive way. It’s a blend of the new tactics, stories, and styles that keeps the adrenaline pumping.

Then there’s the clash of worlds – the dark, brooding lore of Warhammer colliding with Fortnite’s bright, wacky universe creates a mash-up that’s as intriguing as it is fun. It’s a visual and narrative feast for players who love a bit of depth with their dance emotes.

But it’s not just about what you play; it’s about how you play it together. Introducing Warhammer 40K to Fortnite is like throwing the ultimate fan convention in-game, sparking a buzz that goes beyond the screen.

It’s about sharing your epic wins and fails, crafting insane new game modes in Creative, and maybe even cosplaying your favorite character in the real world.

For the Warhammer 40K faithful, it’s a chance to see their heroes (and villains) in a whole new light. And for those who’ve never ventured into the grim darkness of the far future, it’s the perfect getaway.

We see some eyebrows being raised in the back, but here us out. If Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 Show with Amazon is a success, or a Warhammer 40K Cinematic Universe picks-up, we’re definitely going to see a Space Marine do the floss.

You read it here first!

Deep Rock Galactic

Deep Rock Galactic Poster

Deep Rock Galactic’s universe of intrepid dwarven miners facing off against hordes of alien creatures in the depths of space mines is a perfect canvas for a Warhammer 40K infusion.

Imagine a game mode with Squats, the Warhammer universe’s stout and sturdy space dwarves, at the forefront of exploration and combat.

These miners aren’t just after rare minerals; they’re also fighting against the encroaching darkness and chaos of the galaxy.

New Enemies to Face in the Caverns

As players delve deeper into the mines, they wouldn’t just encounter the familiar threats of cave leeches and glyphid swarms.

Instead, they’d find themselves up against the insidious Gretchin, cunning and numerous, setting up ambushes and sabotaging equipment.

We all know Orks develop underground so imagine Ork Boyz, brutish and eager for a fight, could emerge from the darkness, turning mining expeditions into frantic battles for survival.

The Tyranids, Warhammer 40K’s ultimate alien menace, could provide an even greater challenge.

Imagine facing a Lictor, its chameleonic skin blending into the rock walls, just before it strikes. These encounters would elevate the tension and strategy to new heights, requiring Squat miners to not only rely on their mining know-how but also on their combat skills honed through centuries of conflict.

And it’s not just about the enemies. The Squats could bring their unique technology into play, from setting up automated defense turrets to deploying rugged mining Kin outfitted for both excavation and combat.

The game could introduce a variety of missions, from defending a mining outpost against waves of Orks to extracting valuable artifacts from under the noses of a Tyranid hive.

Would it Work?

Merging Deep Rock Galactic with Warhammer 40K is a match made in gaming heaven that’s bound to excite players for several compelling reasons.

Imagine the thrill of navigating alien-infested mines, now populated with the likes of Orks and Tyranids, turning every expedition into an epic saga. It also introduces a layer of strategy and depth, as players don the roles of Squats, wielding faction-specific tech against iconic foes, deepening the gameplay experience.

Lastly, but equally important, the Squats of W40K need more brand awareness!

What would we call this game / mode?

It’s hard to choose between “The Grimdark Grind: Squats, Sweat, and Stone” and “Beards, Bolts, and Big Bad Bugs” so we’ll have to come back to it.

World of Tanks

World of Tanks Warhammer 40K Crossover

Imagine ramping up this armored warfare by merging with the vast, battle-hardened universe of Warhammer 40K.

Envision your tank crew not as just soldiers from the past but as the venerated crews of the Adeptus Astartes’ Predators, the sleek anti-grav skimmers of the Eldar, or even the ramshackle but deadly battle wagons of the Orks.

But the transformation isn’t only skin deep. Adorn your armored behemoths in the colors and heraldry of Warhammer 40K’s most famous Chapters and Clans.

Cloak your tanks in the proud livery of the Ultramarines, the fearsome iconography of the Black Templars, or the striking visuals of the Bad Moons Clan.

Replacing Shells for Lascanons and Plasma Guns

It’s not just about altering appearances; it’s about infusing each match with the identity and storied history of these legendary factions, bringing a piece of their universe into the strategic tank combat of World of Tanks.

And the battlefields? They’re set to evolve into theatres of war that would be right at home in the 41st Millennium.

Picture leading a squadron of Leman Russ Battle Tanks across the war-torn landscape of an Imperial world, under siege by Chaos forces.

Or maneuvering your sleek Eldar grav-tanks through the ruins of a Craftworld, ambushing unsuspecting enemies.

Imagine your tanks equipped with lascannons, autocannons, and plasma guns, bringing the devastating weaponry of Warhammer 40K to bear against your foes.

This isn’t just about upping the ante; it’s about redefining the art of armored warfare, where the tactical depth of World of Tanks meets the iconic armaments and intense lore of Warhammer 40K.

Why would tank commanders rally for this crossover?

World of Tanks players are already tacticians at heart, appreciating the depth and precision of armored combat.

Introducing elements from Warhammer 40K not only refreshes the battlefield but deepens the strategic possibilities, inviting players to not only master new weapons and tanks but also to immerse themselves in the lore-rich scenarios and factions of the Warhammer universe.

Furthermore, the Warhammer 40K setting opens up new avenues for customizations, collaborations, and community-driven content, weaving together fans of both realms in a shared passion for strategy, lore, and epic battles.

For newcomers to Warhammer 40K, it’s a thrilling introduction to a universe where war is eternal, and for veterans, it’s a new way to engage with the beloved lore.

What would we call this game / mode?

There’s only one suitable name for this – and that is “‘Eavy Metal Vanguard”.

On a somewhat related note, until we get a proper World of Warhammer 40K Tanks you might want to check Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks – which is as close as we can get to a vehicular combat game set in the W40K universe.

Back 4 Blood

Envision a game that fuses the heart-racing team dynamics of Back 4 Blood with the profound and shadowy universe of Warhammer 40K, emphasizing the valiant stand of the Imperial Guard against Khorne’s demonic onslaught.

Far from just another routine mission, this represents a trial by fire, sanctioned by the Emperor himself, as you confront the galaxy’s fiercest foes.

Within this scenario, you and your squad symbolize the staunch resilience of the Imperial Guard, often humanity’s final bastion against utter destruction.

Every operation is a critical battle for existence, pushing back against the advancing hordes of Khorne’s daemons, all echoing the sinister cry of “Blood for the Blood God!” The arenas of combat are the remnants of once-proud civilizations, now reduced to wastelands in tribute to the Blood God.

In this world, wielding weaponry transcends mere combat—it becomes a declaration of defiance.

Armed with everything from basic lasguns to the devastating power of Leman Russ Battle Tanks, you confront not just foes of flesh and blood but the incarnate forces of a deity who hungers for violence.

The air resonates not only with the echoes of warfare but with the tangible essence of anarchy and zealotry.

The Back 4 Blood Ogre could stand in for a Khorne Daemon

Here, missions extend beyond mere survival, challenging you to undermine the dark rituals meant to engulf the galaxy in chaos and to target the masterminds of these diabolical campaigns.

Facing off against Bloodletters or even a formidable Bloodthirster demands more than firepower; it requires strategy, unity, and the will to prevail.

It offers players a chance to step into the roles of the Imperial Guard’s unsung heroes, holding the line against chaos with a resolute “For the Emperor!”

The grim, often hopeless struggle against overwhelming odds is a theme common to both Warhammer 40K and cooperative survival games such as Back 4 Blood.

This thematic resonance ensures that the crossover feels natural and compelling, drawing players into a world where their battles feel both epic in scale and personal in stakes.

What would we call it?

We had dozens of names put down, but only one real winner – “Back 4 Blood 4 The Blood God”

What other Video Games have we Missed?

The idea of mashing up the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40K with some of our favorite video games is like sprinkling warp dust on already delicious cake—unexpected, a bit risky, but ultimately a recipe for something spectacularly epic in the right (game developer) hands.

So, as we momentarily dock our dropship at the conclusion of this exploration, we invite you to leave a comment with other ideas of video games crossover that you might have.

If we like it, we’ll expand on it and add it to the list!

  1. Helldivers 2 pretty much copied the bugs from Starship Troopers and the name from Warhammer 40K. HaHa. Still a fun game to play and would definitely work just in a W40K scenario. Doesn’t even need to be about Space Marines – the Imperial Army would do !
